A boutique buyer's guide to wholesale cotton gauze

Cotton gauze earns its rack space the first hot week of the season and keeps it until September. But not every gauze is equal, and a boutique that has been burned by thin, loosely finished fabric is right to ask questions. Here is what we tell buyers who visit our Istanbul atelier.

First, judge the yarn, not the softness in the bag. Fresh gauze can feel deceptively stiff because of natural starch from finishing; that washes out. What matters is twist. High-twist yarn — the tradition Şile cloth is built on — springs back when you crumple a corner and releases wrinkles overnight on a hanger. Low-twist gauze stays crushed.

Second, look at the seams before the print. Wholesale gauze garments live or die at the shoulder and side seams: French seams or covered seams mean the piece survives commercial washing; raw overlock on a loose weave means returns. Buttonholes on band collars tell you everything about a factory's discipline.

Third, order in series, not in singles. Gauze sells across an unusually wide size range because the cuts are generous — a dual-sized run (S/M to 4XL/5XL) covers more customers with less capital than a five-size run of a fitted cotton. Start with dresses and one men's shirt model; add trousers when the rail proves itself.

Fourth, merchandise the fabric, not just the garment. A small card that says '100% Turkish cotton, gets softer with every wash' outsells a discount sticker. Hang white and ecru at eye level — gauze photographs and sells best in its natural palette — and keep one embroidered piece in the window as the story-teller.

Finally, ask your supplier three questions: Do you weave or only sew? Is production OEKO-TEX certified? How fast is a restock? Our answers are: we weave our own cloth in the Şile tradition, every batch is OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and reorders leave Istanbul in 3–7 days. Those are the numbers a summer season runs on.
