Muslin, double gauze or cotton gauze — what's the difference?

Ask a supplier in Istanbul, a boutique owner in Berlin and a shopper in Texas about the same airy cotton dress and you will hear three different words: Şile bezi, Musselin, cotton gauze. They are not three fabrics. They are three markets describing one family of open-weave cotton.

Muslin is the oldest of the names — a plain-woven, lightweight cotton that has been traded under that word for centuries. In the UK and most of Europe it still means exactly that. In the United States the same word drifted toward two narrower uses: cheap calico for sewing toiles, and swaddle cloth for babies. That drift is why American fashion brands rarely put 'muslin' on an adult dress.

Double gauze is the US sewing and apparel term for two layers of open-weave gauze tacked together at intervals. The doubling gives the fabric body while keeping the airflow, and it produces the signature crinkle that never fully irons out — which is the point. If your customers ask for double gauze, they want that texture.

Cotton gauze is what most American garment brands actually print on the label. It covers single and double constructions and reads as summery rather than medical, which bare 'gauze' does not.

Şile cloth sits inside this family as Turkey's own, oldest member. Woven in and around the Black Sea town of Şile for over a century, it uses a high-twist yarn — sıfır numara kıvrak — in both warp and weft, which puckers the surface into a livelier crinkle and a softer drape than flat commercial muslin. Traditionally the bolts were washed in the sea and sun-bleached on quartz sand.

For a boutique the practical takeaway is simple: stock the fabric, and name it in your customer's language. In our catalog you will see all the terms used together deliberately, because a dress that is 'Şile cloth' in Istanbul is 'muslin' in Manchester and 'cotton gauze' in Miami — and it sells in all three.
